Where are your newborn sessions held?
I currently don’t have a studio so would come to your home for the newborn photo session. I shoot all natural light so as long as you have an area of your home with good natural light (usually by a large window or glass sliding door), will work great. Also, weather permitting, I love photographing infants outside as well if you're interested.
When are newborn sessions typically held?
I do recommend photos be taken within the first 14 days of life, if possible. Babies are sleepiest then and most easily posed. Sessions can be lengthy and can last anywhere from 2-4 hours depending on the baby.
Do I need to buy anything for the session?
I bring all of the props, blankets, headbands, bonnets, etc for the session. Although I love props, I limit the amount of props that I use so that the focus of the photo lies on your baby. I usually photograph babies with mostly neutrals and pops of color; usually soft tones. If there is something special you’d like baby photographed in of course that is fine. However, I ask that you limit the items as this is a part of my creative process. I love vintage props & a soft, organic, natural look on newborns.
What style of newborn photography do you do?
There are typically 2 kinds of newborn sessions: Posed & Lifestyle.
Posed sessions are more formal in nature and work best when the baby is very sleepy and “mold-able”. The focus in this type of session is on shots of the baby in baskets, buckets, wrapped, hats, & headbands. Or the session can be done more simplistic with baby posed & minimal props.
With lifestyle sessions, there may be some posing, but the intention is to capture more natural images of the baby, usually just in the natural environment of their home.
Personally, I value both styles so I approach my sessions usually as a posed session, but use the breaks in between poses to get my lifestyle shots. The breaks do not have to be wasted time. Having a feeding take place in the best light and you have yourself a great opportunity for some lifestyle shots. Depending on what you prefer, we can do a combination of both sessions or one or the other. Most clients choose to do a combination session.
How do I book my newborn session?
Once you decide that you'd like me to photograph your newborn, I will have you complete a questionnaire to find out more about you & help me prepare for your session, sign a contract/model release, & submit a $100 deposit (which of course goes toward the total cost of your session). Once those are completed, I put your due date on my calendar. As you progress through the pregnancy I ask that you please keep me posted on a potential induction date, scheduled c-section, etc. Then once your baby arrives, I ask that you please contact me within 48 hours of their birth so we can start coordinating a session date.
Do you offer gift certificates?
Yes I do! I've even had people add me to their baby registry so that others can contact me directly to purchase gift certificates toward their newborn session.
